General Information
Sheltered housing staff are
increasingly taking on a more professional role. This one-day course gives
participants the opportunity to look at a variety of skills needed to
promote a professional attitude in their work. The course is aimed
particularly at staff working in sheltered housing schemes but could also be
of interest to those involved in other areas of sheltered housing such as
control centre staff or specialist housing officers.
A range of training methods will be used in delivering the course content.
This will assist in ensuring effective input of course material.
Participants will be encouraged to take an active part in each session.
Aims & Objectives Of The Course
The aim of the course is to allow
participants to gain further skills to enable them to ensure they practice a
professional approach to the many varied areas of their work. Participants
will develop their skills, attitudes and knowledge in the areas of:
• Effective communication skills - both written and oral
• Prioritising their work load
• Obtaining constructive feedback from service users
• Developing flexibility in service delivery
• Dealing with emergencies - during and after the event
• Delegation of work that is more appropriately done by others
Objectives
By the end of the course
participants should be able to:
• Practice effective methods of communication
• Discuss ways of obtaining information from service users
• List methods of assessing their workload and prioritising the same
• Demonstrate flexibility in the way they approach tasks
• Enable service users to take responsibility for activities in the
scheme
• Include the use of other staff and agencies in dealing with appropriate
work
• Handle emergency procedures effectively maintaining a professional
stance
• Take appropriate action after an emergency to accurately record events
Summary
The course is designed to be
flexible and the content and setting can be varied to meet the particular
requirements of individual groups. Participants will be encouraged to adopt
a supportive and positive approach to the group as a whole. It is hoped that
this will allow individuals to achieve greater proficiency and confidence
through taking part in a stimulating and enjoyable learning programme.
