The Mental Capacity Act

[Up]

General Information

This interactive training event addresses the legal and moral issues in relation to The Mental Capacity Act for professional support staff within their own job role.  It encourages participants to explore perceptions and attitudes towards mental capacity and consider their legal and moral obligations when providing support to service users to whom The Mental Capacity Act may apply. It is designed to help staff recognise their own role and responsibilities when providing support to people who are experiencing mental ill health. The course is primarily for people working in either a community or residential setting but may also benefit others working in similar environments.

The training day itself will aim to create a general awareness and understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and focus on the role of Sheltered / Supported Housing Staff (and others who provide support services) in relation to the Act.

This training event will be supported by a workbook providing participants with the opportunity to gain more in depth information without losing the ability for the day to be an interactive and stimulating event.

The workbook will cover the topic of Mental Capacity and the Mental Capacity Act in greater detail affording participants to gain a greater knowledge and wider understanding of the topic.  The content covered within the workbook will enable students to revise the subject matter at any time after the initial training day

The training will be linked to a piece of reflective practice to enable participants to gain evidence of competency and use this in their Continuing Professional Development (CPD).  This would also enable employers to evidence a standard in respect of staff competency.

The Reflective Practice element of the training will be optional.

A range of training methods will be used in delivering the course content. This will assist in ensuring effective input of course material. Participants will be encouraged to take an active part in each session.
