General Information
This one-day course addresses the problems staff may face when working in a variety of settings both in and away from the office environment. Specifically when having to visit clients in their own homes, at public meetings or when confronted in the street. The course is designed primarily for people who work in a position that calls for them to be carrying out home visits or in a community setting away from a structured establishment. Office based front line staff who travel to and from various places of work may also find this course beneficial.

A range of training methods will be used in delivering the course content. This will assist in ensuring effective input of course material. Participants will be encouraged to take an active part in each session.

Aims and Objectives of the Course
The aim of the course is to look at the general safety of staff when visiting client's homes and the precautions that can be taken to avoid potential risk situations.

Participants will develop their skills, attitudes and knowledge in the areas of:

The path to violence - where it comes from.
Recognising when customers are aroused.
Being aware of potential triggers.
Coming to blows: managing confrontation safely.
Minimising the customers frustration using assertiveness - not aggression.
Saying 'no': building a code of safe practice.

Objectives
By the end of the course participants should be able to:

Consider the model of the path to violence;
Examine their experience of customer behaviour to identify the verbal and non-verbal cues to arousal;
Build up a catalogue of triggers to aggression, relating to the task being done, the environment in which it is done, and the workers behaviour;
Explore the confrontation process and how to create space and move constructively out of the confrontation;
Think through their own 'natural' behaviour when they are trying to keep a potentially difficult situation from getting out of hand;
Draw up two codes of safe practice - "avoiding danger" and "saying no".

Summary
The course is designed to be flexible and the content and setting can be varied to meet the particular requirements of individual groups.

Participants will be encouraged to adopt a supportive and positive approach to the group as a whole. It is hoped that this will allow individuals to achieve greater proficiency and confidence through taking part in a stimulating and enjoyable learning programme.
