General Information

This one-day course aims to develop the skills of participants when caring for someone who is recently bereaved. It is designed to help staff to cope with the emotive feelings that often arise in this situation as well as covering some practical ways of obtaining support. The course is primarily for people working in either a community or residential setting but may also benefit others working in similar environments.
A range of training methods will be used in delivering the course content. This will assist in ensuring effective input of course material. Participants will be encouraged to take an active part in each session.

Aims & Objectives Of The Course

The aim of the course is to look at the way participants are likely to be involved in supporting people who are coping with bereavement and to address the issues this raises. Participants will develop their skills, attitudes and knowledge in the areas of:

• Utilising other resources to support the client

• Understanding the many areas of bereavement

• Addressing and coping with their own needs and feelings

• Supporting people who are bereaved

• Effective ways of obtaining support

Objectives

By the end of the course participants should be able to:

 

• Identify support services and how to utilise them

• Describe and understand people’s reactions to bereavement

• Recognise the needs of others and themselves

• Define effective ways of helping bereaved people

• Address appropriate ways to inform others about a death

 

Summary

The course is designed to be flexible and the content and setting can be varied to meet the particular requirements of individual groups.

Participants will be encouraged to adopt a supportive and positive approach to the group as a whole. It is hoped that this will allow individuals to achieve greater proficiency and confidence through taking part in a stimulating and enjoyable learning programme.
