Delivering Service to People with Learning Disabilities

Who Course is for:

Staff working and delivering service to tenants/lessees living in sheltered/supported and general needs housing who, through their role, come into contact with:

  •  Tenants/lessees and other service users with learning disabilities,

  •  Other team members and/or allied professionals who interact with these service users

  •  Relatives of service users with learning disabilities

This course will also be beneficial for those line managers with a responsibility for staff involved in the provision of service to clients with learning disabilities. It will enhance understanding and learning about the emotional and practical issues staff may face and enable managers to provide a more positive role in supporting such staff.

 

Aims and Objectives of the Course

  •  Develop an understanding of how learning disabilities are defined

  •  Appreciate that there are different types of learning disabilities

  •  Develop a wider understanding of the differing types of learning disabilities

  •  Understand the concept of social inclusion

  •  Recognise behaviour and how this can help or hinder

  •  Understand the impact of stereotyping, labelling and negativity

  •  Develop a personal action plan that identifies how the learning from the day will be used within the participants day to day working practices and any further learning required

What you should be able to do by the end of the course

  1. Define the meaning of the term ‘learning disability’

  2. List the differing types of learning difficulties

  3. Explain the concept of social inclusion

  4. Identify what may help or hinder people with learning difficulties

  5. Describe the negative effects of stereotyping and labelling

  6. Explain appropriate action that can be taken when working with clients who demonstrate challenging behaviour

  7. Address some of key issues around the management of providing service to those with a learning difficulty

Summary

The training is designed to be flexible and the content and setting can be varied to meet the particular requirements of individual groups.

Participants will be encouraged to adopt a supportive and positive approach to the group as a whole. It is hoped that this will allow individuals to achieve greater proficiency and confidence through taking part in a stimulating and enjoyable learning programme.
