AN INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELLING SKILLS

General Information
This one-day course looks at effective methods that can be applied by staff working with people who need support and counselling. It is designed to help those staff to develop basic skills to enable them to recognise when their client needs professional counselling and how to support that client when professional counselling is not appropriate.

A range of training methods will be used in delivering the course content. This will assist in ensuring effective input of course material. Participants will be encouraged to take an active part in each session.

Aims & Objectives Of The Course
The aim of the course is to look at the way participants are likely to be involved in the support and counselling of people with emotive problems and to address the issues this raises. Participants will develop their skills, attitudes and knowledge in the areas of:

Understanding the function of counselling

Listening and hearing the ' unspoken word ' as well as what is being said

Talking with someone who has emotive problems

Helping people to gain and accept professional counselling

Objectives
By the end of the course participants should be able to:

Describe the function of professional counselling

Recognise the need to refer a client to a professional counsellor

Demonstrate effective listening and communication skills

Adopt a structured approach to avoid being judgmental or prejudice

Define appropriate ways of helping people with emotive problems

Identify when and how to refer a client to a professional counsellor

Summary
The course is designed to be flexible and the content and setting can be varied to meet the particular requirements of individual groups. Participants will be encouraged to adopt a supportive and positive approach to the group as a whole. It is hoped that this will allow individuals to achieve greater proficiency and confidence through taking part in a stimulating and enjoyable learning programme.
