Regional Study Centres report overwhelming demand for places on
The National Certificate Course
When SHN launched the 2011 dates for the National Certificate in
Sheltered & Supported Housing Studies reports soon came in that
demand was high. Some regional venues were fully booked
within weeks of releasing the dates. It became clear that
demand outweighed places. Ray Sawyer-James, Head of
Development & Academic Services said "we are delighted to
receive such a positive response. We are now in the
process of setting up further regional venues to cater for the
high volume of students". For up to date information

Organisations that have sent staff on this course have
identified that they find the content extremely relevant.
One of the things that is particularly popular is that this is
the only course that also enables the student to gain 'The
Accredited Practitioners Award' in addition to their National
Certificate. Another is that the content links
directly to national standards, which provides sponsoring
organisations (and the student) evidence of competency in
meeting these standards.
A high percentage of students report that studying on the course
has enabled them to gain a much wider understanding of the
importance to meeting these national standards and their role in
assisting their service to do so. Students also identified
that they gained greater insight into delivering support that is
truly client centred and developed their skills on how to work
in partnership with other support services.
The course offers a number of 'pathways' of study
including Sheltered / Supported Housing, Social Alarm /
Telecare, Community Housing Related Support. This enables
the student to choose the most appropriate pathway of study in
relation to their own work. Course content and all
assessed work is carefully designed to enable the student to
link all areas of their study to their own workplace setting.
Students use their studies as an opportunity to review their own
practice in areas such as providing effective support to
clients, professional boundaries, safeguarding of adults &
children, equality & diversity, maintaining safe working
practices, team working and working in partnership. This
enables them to develop their skills further.
As well as running the course at regional study centres across
the country, the course can also be studied via distance
e-learning and also in-house at an organisations venue.
